Quads and Payouts

Category: Texas Holdem FAQCardRoom @ 6:56 am

Hello,
I have a very simple question. Do quads need a kicker? To understand everything, please read below.

Hi Tom,
I hope you are doing fine.

I made this letter because I wanted to clarify some things. In our last talk, I told you that I have confirmed your payouts using only one pocket card, but unfortunately, it was a wrong info.

Please don’t make conclusions first, I’ll explain things. In the hand number 31871065 that was dated 04/08/2006, you used both pocket cards that’s why you received a payout quite unexpectedly from the Jackpot.

Kindly refer to the summary provided just below:

Pot Size: $24.70
Rake: $1.30

Board Hand: 7? 7? 5? 3? 7?
Players:
8. nuclous – Win $24.70 – 8? 7?

Remember Tom, that a poker hand is made up of five cards. If you can remember, you used your pocket 7 to fill up the four of a kind, however, you also used your pocket 8 as a kicker for the hand. If you’d analyze things, both pocket cards were used, hence adhering to the Royal Jackpot “Terms and Conditions”, causing you to receive a payout for such.

Tom, the software was designed to give the best available hand at all times. And because your your pocket 8 was higher than the other two cards up on the board,(5?
3?) it was used to finally make up your five card poker hand (8? 7? 7? 7?7?).

Your following hand also bothered me. Kindly see below the summary. By the way, the hand number is 41361408.

Pot Size: $35.15

Rake: $1.85
Board Hand: T? J? J? 2? J?

Players:

5. nuclous – Lost $10.00 – A? A?
6. jelloh – Win $35.15 – K? J?

For this, pocket jack was used to complete the four of a kind, and pocket King as the kicker for five card poker hand. Well, the pocket King was higher than the remaining two cards, thus producing a hand of K? J?J? J?J?.

For the hand you are after, kindly see the summary below. The hand number is 41075504 dated 04/21/2006.

Pot Size: $26.60
Rake: $1.40
Board Hand: J? Q? 9? 8? 9?
Players:
7. nuclous – Win $26.60 – T? T?

Did you noticed that only one of your pocket cards was used to complete the hand and the straight flush? And that your winning hand is 8?9?T?J?Q?, which have paved the way for the elimination of your other pocket card which is the T?. Thus, as both of your pocket cards were not used, you didn’t received any payout.

Sorry for any misleading information I’ve given you before.

Thanks!

Tom,

Texas Holdem is the only game in which quads can have a kicker. The reason is due to the sharing of board cards. There is a time where two players can phesibly have quads in holdem. If there are quads on board and the board card is lower than your hole cards, then the best kicker will win the hand.

In Texas Holdem you make the best five card hand. In the example above, your other hole card was higher than the cards on board and therefore became part of your five card hand.
